Belfast unrest spreads after knife attack sparks riots and protests

A knife attack in Belfast that left a man with life-changing injuries triggered a wave of disorder across Northern Ireland and protests in Scotland, as police, political leaders and community groups appealed for calm. The violence followed the charging of 30-year-old Hadi Alodid with attempted murder, possession of a knife and threats to kill after an attack in north Belfast on Monday night. Prosecutors told Belfast Magistrates' Court that the victim, Steven Ogilvy , suffered severe injuries and lost his left eye.
