Having dogs impacts teens’ social skills, according to Japanese study

TOKYO, Japan — A Japanese study showed findings that having a pet dog at home can help alter adolescent children’s microbiome to make them happier and have better social skills. This study, based on surveys of teens and experiments involving mice, was published in the US journal iScience. Children’s gut microbiota is partially altered either by dogs’ resident bacteria entering the children’s system or by changes in children’s gastrointestinal environment due to changes in children’s psychological condition from living with dogs, according to Takefumi Kikusui, a professor at Azabu University and a member of the team. WASHINGTON D.C. — A Powerball player in Arkansas won a $1.817 billion jackpot in Wednesday’s Christmas Eve drawing, ending the lottery game’s three-month stretch without a top-prize winner. The winning numbers were 04, 25, 31, 52 and 59, with the Powerball number being 19. NHA condones payment of P624M in penalties, interests for over 14K beneficiaries

MANILA, Philippines – The National Housing Authority (NHA) has condoned about 14, 330 accounts worth P624 million, considered the largest in its history, in an effort to bring relief to its affected beneficiaries. General Manager Joeben Tai said the Condonation 7 program, which would end on Dec. 31, 2025, was rolled out "to allow and consider more families, particularly those affected by economic challenges and consecutive calamities to avail of the discounted housing payments.” He said the condonation program granted 100 percent removal of penalties and delinquency interest and condoned 95 percent of unpaid amortization interest. The NHA chief told The Manila Times via Viber that the condonation program was originally scheduled to end on Oct. 31, 2025 in time for its 50th anniversary but it was extended until the end of the year. After eight months of implementing the largest condonation initiative, the NHA said that as of Nov. 30, NHA has collected a total of P29,374,466 from those who availed of the program.
