NGCP issues yellow alert for Visayas grid

MANILA, Philippines - A yellow alert is up anew for the Visayas grid on Friday due to inadequate power supply caused by underperforming power plants and high demand, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said. Based on its advisory as of 8 a.m., the yellow alert will take effect between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach 2,379 megawatts (MW). Available capacity is now at 2,608 MW as some plants are being repaired. NGCP said that with 25 plants on forced outage, 11 running on derated capacities, 929.80 MW were unavailable to the grid. The transmission firm said that the affected coal plants were the Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW). A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
