More govt assistance eyed for Manila fire victims

MANILA, Philippines— Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian said the government eyes more assistance to families displaced by the Parola Compound fire in Manila last May 23. Gatchalian said this when he visited the victims on Saturday, where he distributed a total of 3,100 bags of 10 kgs of rice to approximately 2,984 families displaced by the said fire. “Well, we can see that we still have a lot of needs in addressing the housing program and, of course, the needs of our countrymen, basic things like electricity and water,” said Gatchalian. “We can see that we still have a lot to do. So, if we can't provide them with safe housing, this (the fire) will continue,” he added. Gatchalian noted that they will coordinate with the local government to provide more assistance to the victims of the fire. “Definitely, one of the things we're looking at is housing and education because a lot of kids are injured and are not attending school. So, it's important for them to continue their studies,” he said.
