Peru decides — Voters cast ballots in presidential runoff between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sanchez

"Peruvians headed to the polls on Sunday to take part in the presidential runoff election, a vote that will determine who will govern the country for the next five years. Footage from Lima shows some of the first voters arriving early in the morning at the Libertador San Martín Private Educational Institution in the district of San Borja to cast their ballots in a contest marked by deep political polarization. More than 27 million Peruvians are eligible to vote, including nearly 1.3 million living abroad. Voting is compulsory in Peru, and citizens who fail to vote may face fines. Voters are choosing between Keiko Fujimori, leader of the Fuerza Popular party and a presidential candidate for the fourth time, and Roberto Sanchez, a left-wing politician and former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism. The runoff is being held after neither candidate secured the majority required to win the presidency in the first round of voting. Electoral authorities are expected to release the first preliminary results throughout the evening. Whoever emerges victorious will take office amid years of political instability. Over the past decade, Peru has experienced multiple changes of government, including both elected and interim presidents, against a backdrop of impeachments, political crises, and social unrest."
