10 kilometres high! - Shiveluch volcano sends towering ash plume over Russia's Kamchatka

"Russia’s Shiveluch volcano erupted in the Kamchatka region over the weekend, sending a towering ash plume around 10 kilometres above sea level. Footage captured on Saturday shows a huge cloud rising above the crater before gradually spreading through the atmosphere. The Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Survey said the eruption prompted a red aviation hazard warning, the highest level on the four-colour scale. Experts warned that Shiveluch remains highly active and that further explosive eruptions could send ash as high as 12 kilometres, posing a potential danger to aircraft travelling through the region. Shiveluch is one of Kamchatka’s largest and most active volcanoes. It is located around 440 to 450 kilometres from the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. "
