Former women combatants demand end to stigma linked to being ex-NPAs

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines ― Former women combatants fight stigma as they struggle to return to normal life and reintegrate into society. This was the common thread among the stories shared by former New People’s Army (NPA) combatants Lourdes Acenas Caculba and Jean Bautista-Mabaga; and Hafida Romato Maute, the sister of Omar Maute, who founded the Islamic State-linked Maute Group that, along with their Abu Sayyaf Group allies, seized sections of Marawi City in 2017 that led to the five-month fighting that devastated the city. The three women shared their stories in the December 11 summit organized by WeCare […]... Keep on reading: Former women combatants demand end to stigma linked to being ex-NPAs

Manila archbishop urges humility this Christmas

Manila archbishop urges humility this Christmas

MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Jose Advincula, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila, urged Catholics to rediscover humility and reverence at the heart of Christmas, calling attention to the often-overlooked act of kneeling during the Profession of Faith, on Thursday. Advincula said many faithful rushed or forgot the gesture at the words proclaiming that Christ “was made flesh,” even though it marked the very center of the celebration of the Lord’s Nativity. He said kneeling was not merely an external sign of reverence but an act of thanksgiving and openness that allowed Jesus to truly dwell among believers, both in churches and in homes. The Manila archbishop invited families to draw near to Bethlehem by kneeling like the shepherds and the wise men and offering faith, love, and hope at the manger. He warned that when society bowed to wealth and power instead of humility, Christmas becomes shallow and empty, urging the faithful to turn away from darkness and kneel before Christ, whom he described as Emmanuel and the source of peace.

MMFF 2025 Review: ‘Manila’s Finest’ proves no one's a saint amid tyranny

No one is a saint. This is what the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2025 entry “Manila’s Finest” aims to show from the beginning. However, it is the inevitable turn to political corruption that exposes those who abuse power, bystanders, and those who fight back — even though it is often too late. Tinged in sepia-toned and a nostalgic trip to 1969, the film opens with policemen Homer Magtibay (Piolo Pascual), Billy Ojeda (Enrique Gil), Severino Meneses (Romnick Sarmenta), and Regelio Liwanag (Joey Marquez) goofing off after a day’s work. As dignified as they seem, they are not as honorable […]... Keep on reading: MMFF 2025 Review: ‘Manila’s Finest’ proves no one's a saint amid tyranny

Following their quarterfinals exit at the hands of top-seeded San Miguel Beer, 101-94, Alas pointed to familiarity and chemistry as key areas NLEX must build on as they set their sights higher in the next two conferences. “Our coaches’ system is always consistent. We just have to look at teams like San Miguel, Rain or Shine, TNT and Ginebra, which have a core that’s been developed for a long time,” Alas said on Thursday at Araneta […]...
