"A nostalgic ‘sneak-eating’ competition at a Shanghai shopping mall on Sunday has taken social media by storm, transforming childhood memories into a lively urban spectacle. Footage captured on the day shows classroom desks set beneath a green chalkboard, where adults secretly ate instant noodles while pretending to read textbooks during a mock class, all under the watchful eye of a faux ‘teacher’. The game, which gave participants just 10 minutes to finish their meal without being caught, offered a lighthearted escape from urban pressures, creating an atmosphere of comedic tension as flushed-faced competitors tried to appear innocent while hastily devouring their noodles, amid bursts of laughter from both participants and onlookers. "Since it’s modelled after a Chinese class, it doesn’t just bring back memories of second-grade lessons—it also makes the aroma of the instant noodles taste even more nostalgic," said one contestant. "I thought we had to wait for a signal to start. But then I realised I could start eating early to get a head start and win from the very beginning," a participant shared. Meanwhile, a gamemaster acting as the 'teacher' noted the event's humorous reflection of her own school days, recalling how students in the front row would mischievously sneak snacks during class. "In fact, that’s exactly where I used to sit. I did plenty of naughty things back then, like sneaking snacks like chips and instant noodles during class," she expressed. These types of competitions are becoming increasingly popular in China as younger generations seek nostalgic, experiential ways to unwind and temporarily escape the high-pressure demands of modern workplace culture."
