"Several thousand demonstrators gathered in Berlin on Monday, demanding the immediate resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s federal government. Footage shows protesters filling 7th of June Street and gathering near the Brandenburg Gate, with many carrying German flags and placards bearing slogans such as 'Merz must go!' The demonstration was organised under the banner of 'Projekt M1llion'. Police counted around 2,000 participants at midday, while organisers had registered up to 10,000 people for the event. Protesters demanded direct democracy and an end to the government’s migration policies. They also called for the abolition of public broadcasting fees, stricter legal accountability for politicians and an end to Germany's financial support to Ukraine. "Ukraine has practically become his second home," a protester said. "People already call him the Chancellor of Ukraine. All the money that we in Germany would need for our own infrastructure is simply being poured into the war economy and the war machine." "Germany has now become a party to the conflict. That is how it must clearly be assessed. And because of that, Germany will not send my sons off to war. That is why I am here," added a second. The gathering caused major traffic disruption around the Tiergarten and Berlin-Mitte. 7th of June Street was closed between, with restrictions expected to remain until around 20:00 local time. Recent polling has shown that only 16% of Germans are satisfied with Merz's leadership, with support for Germany’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc dwindling. A poll in April found he was the most unpopular leader in the world - coming bottom of a poll of 24 democratically elected heads."
