"Pan-African and anticolonial activist Kemi Seba was seen at his latest court appearance on Monday - a bail hearing related to an expired tourist visa - as he continues to fight extradition to Benin. Seba was detained in April for overstaying on a three-month tourist visa. He is seeking asylum in South Africa, while Benin is attempting to extradite him over an alleged attempted coup. "We don't know on what basis the extradition is requested or supported, and when we receive the documentation, we'd be in a position to consult with Mr Kemi Seba and take further instructions from him, specifically in respect of the allegations from the state of Benin," said his attorney, Bill Kobras. The bail decision is expected on June 18, with his extradition case being heard on July 14. Authorities in Benin have accused him of 'incitement to rebellion' and 'undermining state security' following his alleged support for a failed coup. He gained international notoriety after burning a CFA franc banknote in 2017. He was stripped of his French citizenship in 2024."
