"The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated on Monday that there are groups seeking to provoke a repressive response from the government in the context of social protests taking place before the inauguration of the FIFA World Cup 2026. During her morning press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum argued that some actors want international attention to focus on a potential confrontation between authorities and protesters, rather than the tournament's opening ceremony. "There are groups that want to provoke us, and they are not necessarily teachers, meaning what they want is repression," declared the president. "What they are looking for is that before the World Cup inauguration, the international headline is: the Mexican government represses teachers. That's what they are looking for, and they won't get it," she added. The president assured that her administration will guarantee both the respect for the right to protest and the peaceful development of events related to the World Cup inauguration. Recently, members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) took to the streets of Mexico City to express their dissatisfaction with issues of decent pensions, improvements in working conditions, salary demands, and calls for dialogue with the federal government. The protests have affected mobility and the progress of preparations for the international event. For its part, the CNTE has stated that their actions aim to make their demands visible and press for concrete agreements, while the authorities have called for dialogue to avoid further impacts on the public and maintain public order during the World Cup. During the same conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that several heads of state have canceled their attendance at the opening ceremony due to internal matters in their respective countries. However, she indicated that they will send official representatives. She also confirmed the attendance of the King of Spain at activities in Jalisco and noted that the possibility of holding a meeting with him is still being considered."
