'This town might not be livable anymore' - Storm Boris leaves 500 homes underwater after flooding hits Mexico's Oaxaca

"Around 500 homes remain submerged in the Cuauhtemoc neighbourhood of San Mateo del Mar, in Mexico's Oaxaca. This comes after a destructive combination of violent ocean swells and heavy rains triggered when Storm Boris hit the country's southeastern Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. Footage captured on Tuesday depicts massive waves battering the coastline, sending torrents of water rushing through residential streets and straight into private houses. Left with no alternative, stranded residents are wading through deep floodwaters as they wait for local and federal authorities to provide emergency relief. "It is always the swell. This time the water has broken through, and it marks the fourth time we have been hit here," explained Juan Orozco, a local resident impacted by the disaster. "We often request emergency support from the municipal, state, and federal governments, but sometimes they completely ignore us." According to Orozco, the unpredictable flooding and stagnant, rising water poses a lethal threat to vulnerable children and infants. "A child or a baby could easily drown during the night because the sea always strikes after dark," he warned, noting that the community has seen no signs of the water receding. Residents expressed frustration over the absence of safe evacuation routes and the lack of an immediate response from the municipal government. Many families have chosen to remain inside their damaged properties despite the hazardous conditions due to a lack of any alternative. "Right now we can see that this town might not be livable anymore," explained Rogelio Mora. "Now we don't know how, if we are going to have a solution with the government, with the municipality or if everyone is on their own." "The solution for the water to dry would be to open a channel, open it so the water goes to the sea, because if it is not opened, the water keeps rising," he added. "We are going to end up like ducks." In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis, personnel from the Mexican Navy Secretariat have deployed an emergency disaster relief plan to assist the stranded population and initiate security patrols across the flooded neighborhoods."
