Mountains of plastic on the coast – Playa de Ocos, filled with trash after heavy rains in Guatemala

"Solid waste was observed this Tuesday on the beach of Ocos, department of San Marcos, municipality of Ocos, Guatemala, after being carried by the currents of the rivers that flow into the Pacific coastal area, following the intense rains recorded in recent days. Videos captured at the site show accumulations of trash, including plastics and other solid waste, scattered along the coast, while strong waves persist and residents observe the situation. Last week, high tide was also reported on the beaches of Ocos. Authorities reported that a maximum anomaly of 0.29 meters was recorded in that locality. According to forecasts, unstable conditions are expected in the region as tropical storm Cristina advances. The meteorological office of Guatemala ruled out a "direct impact" of the phenomenon on the country on Tuesday, although it warned that its proximity will favor rains and strong winds in the center and south of the territory between Wednesday and Thursday. Cristina was located this Tuesday about 260 kilometers from the municipality of Moyuta, in the department of Jutiapa, southeast of Guatemala. Additionally, it maintains a slow movement and remains near the coasts of Chinandega, Nicaragua."
