Johannesburg mass shooting - At least 12 dead as 'more than 10 gunmen open fire'

"At least 12 people - nine men and three women - were killed, and nine sustained injuries, following mass shooting in Johannesburg's eastern suburb of Cleveland on Tuesday. Footage filmed on Wednesday shows forensic teams carrying bodies from the scene and examining the area. According to media reports, more than ten heavily armed men attacked the Jumpers informal settlement on Tuesday evening. "People involved in this incident could be classified as insane, heartless, and barbaric," said Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng Police Commissioner. "Some of the victims - where they were lying - it looks like this is a place of the processing centre for illegal mining." Johannesburg ward councillor Neuren Pietersen added that the incident was not the first one to happen in the Jumpers community but 'the third or fourth'. "I understand that this particular incident has killed a lot of bystanders, and it appears that it could be Zama Zama (illegal miners)-related factional fighting. Unfortunately, this has now impacted many people who are just living here and trying to eke out a living in Johannesburg," he concluded. Police have launched a search for the gunmen, and no arrests had been made at the time of publication. The motive for the attack is not yet known and remains part of an ongoing investigation."
