Tremor tragedy - Marcos Jr tours quake-hit General Santos, announces cash aid to bereaved families

"Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr travelled to General Santos on the southern island of Mindanao on Wednesday to assess earthquake damage and deliver aid to displaced families and victims of Monday's deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Footage shows the president visiting heavily damaged sites, including St Elizabeth Hospital, Romana C Acharon Central Elementary School, General Santos City National High School, and an aid distribution centre, where he handed a copy of the assistance payout to Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao. "Right now, there are obvious damages that can be seen, but we still really need to make sure it is safe. That is why the engineers will come in to assess which parts of the building can still be used, which ones are completely unusable," Marcos Jr. stated. "I gave the Mayor 100 million pesos (around $1.6 million - €1.4 million) from the LGSF to repair their City Hall, the General Santos City Hall. And all the families who have casualties or victims who died, we will give 50,000 (around $800 - €700) each for them as assistance for their loved ones who passed away," he continued. According to the Office of Civil Defence (OCD), at least 37 people have been confirmed dead across Mindanao, including 13 in General Santos City. Four people remain missing, while at least 478 others have been reported injured. Officials warned the toll could rise as emergency operations continue. The visit follows a major earthquake that struck Mindanao on Monday, causing widespread destruction across multiple municipalities and triggering tsunami waves of up to 1.4 meters along parts of the southern Philippine coast, with warnings or advisories issued in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan. The Philippines lies on the seismically active Pacific 'Ring of Fire' and is frequently affected by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions."
