"Israeli military forces advanced into the countryside of Syria's southern Quneitra province on Wednesday, establishing a temporary checkpoint on a road linking the villages of Saida Al-Golan and Al-Maqriz. Footage shows light traffic moving through Saida village as Israeli troops patrol the area. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) “a force belonging to the occupation advanced on the road linking the villages of Saida Al-Golan and Al-Maqriz in southern Quneitra countryside, consisting of three military vehicles, where it set up a temporary checkpoint in the area, searched passersby, and then withdrew.” The Israeli military had not commented on the reported operation or the temporary checkpoint at the time of publication. The incident comes amid a dramatically altered security landscape in southern Syria following the collapse of the Ba'athist government in December 2024 and the emergence of a transitional administration in Damascus led by Ahmad Al-Sharaa. Since the change in government, Israel has expanded its military presence along the border, taking control of areas within the former buffer zone and carrying out a series of strikes targeting Syrian military infrastructure. The shifting security situation has fuelled concerns among several minority communities, including Druze, Alawite and Christian populations. Leaders in neighbouring Suwayda Governorate have meanwhile called for greater regional autonomy as uncertainty continues across parts of southern Syria."
