Full probe into Ateneo athletes’ death sought

SEN. Bong Go called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of two athletes of the Ateneo de Manila University during a training session in Dipaculao, Aurora. Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned on Monday. Go expressed sympathy for the grieving families as he stressed the importance of athlete safety. ”I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili,” Go said in a statement. “As an athlete and basketball player since my youth, this incident is painful for me.” Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, urged concerned government agencies and sports organizations to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragedy. ”Many questions need to be answered to get to the full truth. I join in the quest to know all the facts,” he said. The senator welcomed the initiative of the Philippine Sports Commission to convene an immediate meeting to address the incident and assess the circumstances that led to the deaths of the two athletes. Go emphasized that the safety and welfare of athletes must remain a top priority for sports authorities and institutions. ”The safety of all our athletes and young sports enthusiasts in their training is of utmost importance to me,” he said. “Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, we hope that it will result in valuable lessons to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.” He added that the Senate stands ready to consider legislative or policy measures should the investigation reveal gaps in existing safety protocols for sports training programs. ”If a law or policy is needed to prevent this, we are ready to address it in the Senate,” Go said. Go said he personally reached out to the family of Baterbonia, whom he described as a fellow Mindanaoan. ”I have also spoken to Rene’s mother, Ma’am Rovelyn Baterbonia, and I have extended my support to their family,” he said.
