LRMC offers free LRT-1 rides on Independence Day

PRIVATE operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) will provide free rides on the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) during designated hours on June 12 as the country marks the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day. In a statement issued Wednesday, LRMC management said all passengers may ride the LRT-1 free of charge from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. as part of its support for the national celebration. The company said the initiative aims to encourage more Filipinos to take part in Independence Day activities and visit historical and cultural sites accessible through the LRT-1, which is known as the country’s “Heritage Line” for passing through key landmarks and destinations in Metro Manila. LRMC said passengers using beep cards only need to tap their cards at the Automated Fare Collection System gates during the free-ride periods, with no fare deducted from their balance. Ticket Vending Machines will continue to process only Stored Value Card purchases and top-up transactions. Passengers who prefer to use Single Journey Tickets may claim free tickets at station teller booths. The rail operator also announced that LRT-1 will observe its holiday operating schedule on June 12. The first trains will depart from both Dr. Santos Station and Fernando Poe Jr. Station at 5 a.m. For the last trips of the day, the final train from Dr. Santos Station will leave at 9:30 p.m., while the last train from Fernando Poe Jr. Station will depart at 9:45 p.m. LRMC said the free ride program is intended to make public transportation more accessible during the holiday while allowing commuters to reconnect with the country’s history and heritage.
