New Ako Bicol lawmaker 'excited' to work, bares legislative priorities

MANILA, Philippines — Newly-proclaimed Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Jan Almario Chan said he was "excited" to work at the House of Representatives and vowed to introduce measures focusing on renewable energy, mental health, and disaster resilience. Chan was proclaimed at the Commission on Elections on Wednesday after the partylist's second nominee Elizaldy Co resigned amid alleged links to the flood control scandal. Co's whereabouts are unknown. Chan is the third nominee who, under the partylist law, succeeds the absentee congressman. He said that while his proclamation was "unexpected," he wanted to continue Ako Bicol's public service. He also intends to bring his expertise in renewable energy, environmental law, and his policymaking and legislative assistance to Congress. Among his priority legislation is a comprehensive Renewable Energy Law, strengthening mental health support systems, especially for parents of children with special needs, and disaster resilience. Chan said that he would deliver meaningful programs and legislation in the next two and a half years of his three-year term that would benefit Filipinos.
