Use of generative AI doubles in Finland

Forty-one percent of Finns aged 16 to 89 have used generative artificial intelligence (AI) services in the past three months, up sharply from 23 percent a year earlier, Statistics Finland reported on Wednesday, reported Xinhua. AI use increased across all age groups. Among 16-24-year-olds, the share rose from 45 percent to 67 percent, and among 25-34-year-olds from 38 percent to 65 percent. More than half of those aged 35-55 said they had used AI, while adoption remained lower among older groups, the agency said. Looking up information was the most common use, cited by 33 percent of respondents, compared with 14 percent a year earlier. Producing or improving text was the second most popular application at 25 percent. Among those aged 16-34, over 40 percent said they used AI for that purpose. The share of people using AI to create images or videos more than doubled to 11 percent from 5 percent, while coding with AI remained rare at just 6 percent. Men reported using generative AI slightly more than women, 43 percent versus 39 percent, though the gender gap has narrowed across all age groups from previous years. "Such rapid adoption of AI services has been based on the low threshold for starting to use them, especially chatbots, and on their practicality in studies, work, and everyday life," said Rauli Kohvakka, specialist researcher at Statistics Finland. He noted that AI use among 16-24-year-olds was often linked to studying, while working-age people tended to use it for job-related purposes, although the most common uses were unrelated to work or study. The data come from Statistics Finland's survey on the population's use of information and communications technology. In a separate survey, the Finland Chamber of Commerce found that AI and automation are rapidly transforming workplaces, replacing both manual and expert-level tasks while boosting productivity. According to the report, 22 percent of companies said AI had reduced manual labor, and 10 percent reported a decline in expert work, up from 15 percent and 5 percent, respectively, a year earlier. Despite these changes, the chamber said AI-driven efficiency is also creating new types of roles and ways of working.
