Japan, EU, and 4 other countries express sympathy for victims of 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said Japan "stands ready" to provide assistance that the Philippines may need following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Mindanao. "Japan always stands with the people of the Philippines," Takaichi said in her message of sympathy which was shared by the Japanese Embassy in Manila. Canada, China, France, the European Union, and the United States, through their embassies in the Philippines, also expressed sympathy to the affected communities in Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and other parts of Mindanao. EU Ambassador to Manila Massimo Santoro on X wrote, "My thoughts are with all those affected and the responders assisting impacted communities." "We continue to monitor the situation closely in coordination with Philippine authorities and stand ready to support Philippine-led response efforts," the US Embassy posted on X. The Chinese Embassy extended "heartfelt condolences to the Philippine people, mourn those who lost their lives, and express our sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster." The Canadian Embassy said it "stands ready to coordinate closely with Philippine government agencies, humanitarian partners, and the international community to help meet urgent needs." The French Embassy expressed its "full solidarity with the Filipino people and the authorities responding to this disaster." Takaichi said she was deeply saddened by reports that the major earthquake that struck off Mindanao in the southern Philippines has caused damage, including the collapse of buildings.
