Dialogue with Tehran 'broken' - IAEA chief says US-Iran nuclear talks are 'complicated' with 'rhetoric more hostile'

"Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, on Monday said that the nuclear talks between the US and Iran were in a 'complicated phase' after Iran and Israel traded fire on Monday for the first time since a ceasefire reached in April. "We seem to be in the midst of, I would say, a complicated phase where attacks seem to be picking up again and of course, rhetoric is again being more hostile," Grossi told reporters during a media briefing in Vienna. He added that the UN watchdog has had no access to Iran's 'crucial' nuclear facilities for almost a year since the Iran-Israel twelve-day war in 2025, calling on Iran to 're-engage'. “Of course, when you have active shelling or bombing, inspections are not possible, but there are many things that can be done," he suggested. "I have sporadic contacts with the foreign minister and others, but basically the channel of communication is broken," he added. When asked whether the US and Iran could agree on a nuclear deal without including the IAEA, Grossi said he hoped the agency would be included. "An agreement without proper verification is an illusion of an agreement. It's a piece of paper and you don't know whether the terms of it are being complied with," he highlighted, adding that both sides recognise the important role of the agency. Iran has remained very critical of the IAEA and suspended cooperation with the agency in July 2025 after the 12-day war, while it later allowed the IAEA to inspect nuclear sites unaffected by that conflict. Meanwhile, the IAEA says that it no longer had knowledge of Iran's nuclear materials."
