Lawless streets - Belfast anti-migration protesters burn cars as police struggle to regain control

"A large mob was seen close to burning cars in Belfast on Tuesday, as police in riot vans attempted to regain control of the streets. This comes after unrest spiraled out of control following the arrest of a Sudanese refugee in connection with a stabbing incident that left a man seriously injured. Footage shows crowds gathered in the street with cars ablaze. A column of police vehicles reaches the scene before withdrawing as the fire intensified. On Tuesday, demonstrations against unchecked migration spread around the city, resulting in vandalism, with barricades set alight by masked protesters and reported attacks on properties and businesses owned by minority ethnic groups. Buses and other vehicles were seen torched in the city, before riot police moved in to disperse the demonstrators. Earlier, footage posted on social media showed what was later framed as an 'attempted beheading', with the knife-wielding attacker slashing at the head and neck of the victim. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as 'sickening'. After announcing that the 30-year old Sudanese national had been arrested and charged with attempted murder, the police noted that there is currently no evidence that Monday's attack was terrorism-related, after a backlash on social media had resulted in calls for protests on the streets of Belfast. The incident comes amid heightened tensions over asylum and migration in the UK, following a string of attacks and unrest outside so-called 'migrant hotels'."
