‘Uwan’ to re-enter PAR Wednesday morning or afternoon

MANILA, Philippines — Severe Tropical Storm Uwan would likely re-enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) either Wednesday morning or afternoon as Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over three Luzon areas, the national weather agency said. Weather specialist Loriedin Dela Cruz-Galicia of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a briefing that Uwan maintains its strength as it slowly moves north-northeastward over the sea south of Taiwan. Still under Signal No. 1 were Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte, the latest Pagasa bulletin said. “Uwan is forecast to move generally northeastward, re-entering PAR this morning or afternoon before making landfall over the southwestern coast of Taiwan by afternoon or evening,” Dela Cruz-Galicia said. It will weaken into a tropical storm prior to its landfall over the southwestern coast of Taiwan.  After landfall, its interaction with Taiwan’s will trigger a continuous weakening trend until it weakens into a remnant low by Friday. The state-run weather agency said Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Ilocos Region would be experiencing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the trough or extension of the severe tropical storm. Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country would likely have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms, it added.

NBA: Mavericks fire GM Nico Harrison 9 months after Luka Doncic trade

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison on Tuesday, an admission nine months later that the widely criticized trade of Luka Doncic backfired on the franchise. The move came a day after Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont attended a 116-114 loss to the Bucks in which fans again chanted “fire Nico,” a familiar refrain since the blockbuster deal in February that brought Anthony Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers and angered the Dallas fan base. The Mavericks appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers to oversee basketball operations. Dumont’s hope for goodwill with the fans […]... A delicate balancing act

A delicate balancing act

In an attempt to strike a delicate balance between protecting farmers’ incomes and keeping prices of basic goods as low as possible for consumers, President Marcos last week approved a “trigger-based” rice tariff mechanism that will adjust import duties depending on global prices of the country’s primary staple. Under Executive Order No. 105 signed last […]... Keep on reading: A delicate balancing act

The calamitous typhoons put forward two examples of visionary local leadership, one successful, the other a failure, but vindicated by lack of success. Dr. Pamela Cajilig summed up the success in this manner: “What seems to be working for Iloilo is the selection of an optimal mix of methods: spillway (hard infrastructure) + coastal wetland […]... BBC must fight, says outgoing chief as Trump threatens to sue

LONDON, United Kingdom — The BBC’s outgoing boss urged staff to “fight” for its journalism Tuesday as the British broadcaster grappled with how to respond to US President Donald Trump’s threat to sue over a misleading edit. Tim Davie’s rallying cry came after Trump threatened the BBC with a $1 billion lawsuit in a row that has renewed pressure on an organization that is regularly used as a political football and often caught up in culture wars. The controversy also lifted the lid on tensions at the top of the renowned institution over the coverage of issues, including the war […]...
