The Better India
Before films like Dhurandhar showed stories of bravery, real heroes were already living them. One of them was Saraswathi Rajamani. At just 16 years old, she joined Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army. But her role wasn’t on the battlefield. She disguised herself as a boy and worked as a spy inside British military camps, gathering critical intelligence for the INA. During one mission, she helped rescue a captured spy linked to Netaji. But while escaping, British soldiers opened fire. Saraswathi was shot in the leg — yet she still managed to escape and complete the mission. Her courage helped protect Netaji and the INA’s operations. While many freedom fighters followed Mahatma Gandhi’s path of non-violence, Saraswathi chose a different route — one filled with extreme risk and sacrifice. Yet today, her story remains largely forgotten. Maybe it’s time we remember the teenage girl who risked everything for India’s freedom.
