We want to lead the EU! - Orban vows to 'transform' Brussels, slams Ukraine membership plans

"Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he wanted to transform Brussels and take over the EU leadership as he rejected plans for Ukraine’s fast-track accession to the European Union, in Budapest on Monday. "The Brussels left wants to admit Ukraine into the Union through an accelerated procedure. This is impossible. It would bring the war into the European Union; it would be a betrayal of European farmers and European citizens," he said. He emphasised that Ukraine’s membership would place an unbearable financial burden on the member states. "There is already serious trouble — the Union does not have enough money, not even for itself. Meanwhile, in the interest of Ukraine, it is taking on €100 billion in loans, thereby dragging the member states into a debt spiral," he noted. Orban also outlined his vision to reshape the European Union, positioning himself and allied political forces as challengers to what he described as a weakening 'Brussels elite.' "We speak openly about the fact that we want to take over the leadership of the European Union. We want to occupy it and transform the Brussels centre," he said during the rally. He added that by the end of the decade, he envisions a Europe dominated by national and conservative political forces. "Those you saw here today—three years from now, they will be the leaders of the European Union," he added. He pointed to political developments in countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Italy and France as evidence of growing support for conservatives across Europe. "Italy is performing fantastically, the right-wing is impressive. Salvini is the strongest governing force among the patriots in Western Europe, but they are constantly forced into compromises with Brussels," he stated. Orban further accused Brussels of supporting online censorship through NGOs and reiterated his accusations towards Ukraine. "Brussels has deployed a network of NGOs that censor the internet, while Kiev has placed Hungarians under an oil blockade, and now you can see that the Ukrainian propaganda machine is also working at full speed," However, Orban voiced confidence regarding the upcoming elections. "Despite this, on April 12, we will win the elections in Hungary!," he concluded. Orban's rally comes weeks before Hungary's parliamentary elections. The vote in Hungary is scheduled for April 12, and the election has narrowed down to Orban, who is seeking his fifth consecutive term, and Peter Magyar of the Tisza Party."
