Unexplained Hastings death: Body found at construction site after development company liquidation

Police continue to investigate after the body of a man was discovered at a large Hastings development halted due to a high-profile liquidation. Emergency services were called after the find at the construction site on Omahu Rd last Wednesday, about 7pm. A self-storage facility is in the process of being built. Police are treating the man’s death as unexplained at this stage and confirmed he was not an employee at the work site. Police have been asking nearby businesses for CCTV footage to help with their inquiries. Officers were still visible on-site at the start of this week, and police said there were no updates to provide as of Tuesday morning. Teak Construction, based in Auckland, was leading the project to build a large Kennards Self Storage facility at the site. The construction site for the storage facility in Hastings is fenced off. Neighbouring businesses say the site was bustling with workers until the liquidation, but work on the site had since gone quiet. The development includes half-completed buildings wrapped in white plastic, including a main two-storey building. Hawke’s Bay Today contacted Teak Construction for comment but was referred to the liquidator. The liquidator, BDO, has also been approached for comment. Kennards Self Storage declined to comment. One nearby worker, who did not want to be named, said he had noticed a hole cut into the fence that surrounded the development. However, he was unsure when it was made. He said he had not noticed any rough sleepers at the address in recent weeks. He said his business’s CCTV footage captured an ambulance pulling in last Wednesday night, but little else, and police had been in touch with them seeking footage.
