Police have released the name of a man who died in a crash on the Lindis Pass, one of six fatal crashes across New Zealand in a grim 24-hour period. He was 71-year-old Murray Kevin Levers, of Matamata. Levers died following a three-vehicle crash on the Lindis Pass on Sunday. His death comes amid what police have described as a devastating weekend on the country’s roads, with six people killed in separate crashes nationwide within roughly a day. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time,” a police spokesperson said. “Police would like to thank the motorists and first responders who acted immediately and did everything they could to help.” The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing. Across the country, fatal crashes were also reported in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Waikato and Southland over the same period. Police have urged motorists to take extra care on the roads. Anyone with information that could assist investigations into any of the crashes is encouraged to contact police.
