MANILA, Philippines — Scientists from the University of the Philippines and Silliman University have assembled a draft genome for the endemic Visayan spotted deer, a milestone they said could strengthen efforts to protect the endangered species. The Visayan spotted deer, or Rusa alfredi, is one of three endemic species in the genus Rusa, native to South and Southeast Asia. It lives in varied habitats, including dense forests and grasslands.
