"Hundreds of people gathered in Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of Argentina’s 1976 coup, during the National Day of Memory for Truth and Justice. Footage shows families, elderly people and activists taking part in the mobilisation, led by organisations including the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, demanding justice for the tens of thousands who were forcibly disappeared during the country’s last military dictatorship. “We live in a country that has a denialist government, that is gradually trying to release the perpetrators of genocide. I am here for memory, truth and justice,” said protester Georgina Andino. Participants carried photographs of victims and shared testimonies about relatives who were abducted during the dictatorship. “I am here for memory, truth and justice, because my sister has disappeared, disappeared by the military system that for seven years was decimating the people,” said protester Daniel Villegas. Some demonstrators also voiced concerns about the current situation in Argentina, including economic hardship and a 'growing denial' of past crimes. Human rights groups estimate that around 30,000 people were killed or forcibly disappeared under the regime. Demonstrators are calling for justice for the crimes committed between 1976 and 1983. While the state has pursued prosecutions, critics say efforts to locate victims' remains have been limited. They also accuse the current government of President Javier Milei of cutting resources for search efforts and characterising ongoing investigations as persecution of former military personnel."
