Warship under fire - Iran says cruise missiles launched at USS Abraham Lincoln

"Footage released by the Iranian military on Wednesday shows the launch of missiles it said were targeting the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The date, location and trajectory of the missiles in the footage could not be independently verified. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the missiles forced the carrier to change position following the reported strike. Iranian Navy Commander Shahram Irani said the vessel was under constant surveillance. “The movements and performance of the hostile aircraft carrier ‘Abraham Lincoln’ are under constant monitoring by the Iranian Army’s navy. Once the hostile group enters the range of our missile systems, it will be directly targeted and subjected to powerful attacks by the Iranian navy,” he said, according to IRNA. There was no immediate comment from the United States Navy at the time of publication. The developments come amid escalating tensions following joint military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, carried out during ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear and missile programmes. Tehran has since launched retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli territory and US military assets across the region, with explosions reported in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the killing of its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, after which his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumed leadership. The conflict has expanded to include Hezbollah in Lebanon, while disruptions to shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel, increasing pressure on global markets."
