MANILA, Philippines—Thousands of motorcycle taxi and delivery riders on Thursday packed the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) in Quezon City where the city is handing out P5,000 in relief assistance amid rising fuel costs. Mayor Joy Belmonte told The Manila Times that she directed Elmo San Diego, the city’s Department of Public Order and Safety chief; and QMC management to ensure the safety of the riders and orderliness during the event. The local government said the distribution will be made in alphabetical order. The riders should bring the original and a photocopy of their professional driver’s license with three signatures. “On behalf of the city government, I am gratified by the quick response of the national government led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board for extending the much-needed assistance to these essential sectors,” Belmonte said. The city government has also set up similar payouts for TNVS (transport network vehicle service) riders as well as jeepney and tricycle drivers.
