"Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast enacted an Energy Emergency Law on Thursday aimed at cushioning the impact of surging fuel prices on households. Speaking in a televised address from La Moneda Palace, Kast thanked Congress for swiftly approving the legislation and acknowledged public frustration over rising living costs. “The world is at war, and that war reached the pocket of every Chilean family. In the price of transport and heating,” he said. The law reinstates economic stabilisation mechanisms to ease domestic fuel costs, including the reactivation of the Petroleum Price Stabilisation Fund. “And with this law, the Petroleum Price Stabilisation Fund is restored up to 60 million dollars, so necessary for heating,” Kast added. The measures also target public transport, with fares set to be frozen in Santiago, with the possibility of extending the policy nationwide. “This plan freezes public transport fares in Santiago, but we also want this to reach the regions,” he said. Kast attributed the crisis to global factors, as energy markets remain under pressure amid the widening conflict in the Middle East. He also called on young people to protest peacefully, urging them not to disrupt essential services such as public transport."
