Holy smokes! Ash columns rise over eastern Indonesia as Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupts

"Massive smoke plumes rose over East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano continued heightened activity. According to Indonesia's volcanology agency (PVMBG), Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has recorded a series of eruptions in recent days, with authorities maintaining Alert Level III, the second-highest level on the country’s four-tier warning system. Residents and visitors are advised to stay at least five kilometres away from the crater due to the risk of further eruptions and volcanic material being ejected from the summit. The 1,584-metre volcano has been one of Indonesia’s most closely monitored volcanoes since a major eruptive phase began in 2024. In June 2025, Lewotobi Laki-Laki sent an ash column up to 10 kilometres into the atmosphere, disrupting air traffic across parts of eastern Indonesia and prompting the highest aviation warning level. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is home to more than 120 active volcanoes, making it one of the world's most volcanically active countries."
