Inde Navarette as Nikki in Curry Barker's breakthrough horror Obsession This article contains major spoilers for Obsession. Obsession has been one of this year’s biggest surprise hits, breaking box office records and becoming one of the most talked-about films online . The unsettling horror film follows Michael Johnson’s Bear, who uses a supernatural “One Wish Willow” to make his crush, Inde Navarrette’s Nikki, become “obsessed” with him. However, this curse leads to bloody consequences as Nikki takes drastic action in her attempts to prove to Bear just how much she loves him. At the end of the film, Bear kills himself, which breaks the curse, leaving Nikki to snap out of the spell surrounded by her dead friends. While a direct sequel to the film looks unlikely – at least, that is, one following the same group of characters – director Curry Barker has shed some light on what he thinks happened to Nikki after that dramatic finale, and it’s certainly not a happy ending. “She probably goes to jail,” Curry told Cinemablend when asked what he thinks happens after the final shot. “She’s probably going to prison for a very long time.” He pointed out: “There’s also, like, a billion dollars in Ian’s house, and Ian’s dead on the floor.” Indeed, towards the end of Obsession, Bear’s friend Ian used his own One Wish Willow to ask for a billion dollars, but is suddenly killed before he could enjoy a single cent of it. The director added: “She’s connected to that money in some way. Who knows what the cops are gonna put together as the story? She’s not gonna have a very good life, I don’t think. It’s very sad.” Curry Barker has a busy year ahead, as he’s lined up to direct Blumhouse’s supernatural horror Anything But Ghosts, as well as A24’s reimagining of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, he’s still keen on returning to the world of Obsession in the future. “What really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode,” Curry told Total Film during a Q&A session. “Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. “Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin at it. That would be really cool.” Curry previously shared that his original ending to Obsession was very different. The YouTuber-turned-filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly around the film’s release that in the film’s original script, Nikki was supposed to die, making the story more akin to a Shakespearean tragedy. He explained: “We had shot a ton of different versions of the official ending, the one that’s in the script, the one that I was excited about, and I was like, ‘Okay, we’ll do one ending where [Nikki] survives, but we’ll just do one take of it, and then we’ll move on’.” Ultimately, this was the one they went for because Inde’s “performance was so good”, ending things on a very different note to how he’d originally intended. Obsession is in cinemas now.
