Historia | Vuosisadan kylmin joulu hyydytti Suomen 30 vuotta sitten

US SC blocks Trump admin from deploying National Guard to Illinois

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to send the National Guard to the state of Illinois, dealing a setback to the administration, reported Xinhua. The court denied the Trump administration's request in a 6-3 vote. "At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois," the court said in an order published on its website. The dispute dates back to Oct. 4, when Trump called 300 members of the Illinois National Guard into active federal service in Illinois, particularly in and around Chicago. The following day, members of the Texas National Guard were also federalized and sent to Chicago, according to the court. On Oct. 9, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a temporary restraining order barring the federalization and deployment of the National Guard in Illinois. The decision was upheld on Oct. 16 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which allowed the administration to federalize the National Guard but not to deploy its members. The Trump administration then appealed to the Supreme Court.

Israel will not fully withdraw from Gaza or Syria: minister

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Israel would never fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip or from Syria, and vowed to establish new settlements in Gaza, reported Xinhua. Speaking at a public ceremony in the West Bank settlement of Beit El, Katz said Israel would establish in northern Gaza Nahal settlement groups, military-backed settlement nuclei from which larger civilian settlements are developed. He said the move would take place "in the right way, at the right time," without specifying a date. Katz said the new settlements would be built "in place of" settlements evacuated as part of Israel's 2005 withdrawal from the coastal enclave, known as the disengagement plan. "We are deep inside Gaza and will never leave all of Gaza -- there will be no such thing," Katz said. Despite a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, Israel has continued near-daily attacks in Gaza and the demolition of buildings in areas where its troops remain deployed. Speaking of Israeli plans in Syria, Katz dismissed U.S.-brokered diplomatic efforts to reach an arrangement between Israel and Syria. "We don't trust anyone ... no agreement," he said. "We will not withdraw even by a millimeter in Syria." Israel moved into the buffer zone in southwestern Syria in December 2024 and later took control of the peak of Mount Hermon.
