The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to send the National Guard to the state of Illinois, dealing a setback to the administration, reported Xinhua. The court denied the Trump administration's request in a 6-3 vote. "At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois," the court said in an order published on its website. The dispute dates back to Oct. 4, when Trump called 300 members of the Illinois National Guard into active federal service in Illinois, particularly in and around Chicago. The following day, members of the Texas National Guard were also federalized and sent to Chicago, according to the court. On Oct. 9, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a temporary restraining order barring the federalization and deployment of the National Guard in Illinois. The decision was upheld on Oct. 16 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which allowed the administration to federalize the National Guard but not to deploy its members. The Trump administration then appealed to the Supreme Court.
Five policemen were killed on Tuesday when unknown militants opened fire on a police vehicle in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police sources said, reported Xinhua. After the attack, the militants also set the police vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene, the sources added. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Israel would never fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip or from Syria, and vowed to establish new settlements in Gaza, reported Xinhua. Speaking at a public ceremony in the West Bank settlement of Beit El, Katz said Israel would establish in northern Gaza Nahal settlement groups, military-backed settlement nuclei from which larger civilian settlements are developed. He said the move would take place "in the right way, at the right time," without specifying a date. Katz said the new settlements would be built "in place of" settlements evacuated as part of Israel's 2005 withdrawal from the coastal enclave, known as the disengagement plan. "We are deep inside Gaza and will never leave all of Gaza -- there will be no such thing," Katz said. Despite a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, Israel has continued near-daily attacks in Gaza and the demolition of buildings in areas where its troops remain deployed. Speaking of Israeli plans in Syria, Katz dismissed U.S.-brokered diplomatic efforts to reach an arrangement between Israel and Syria. "We don't trust anyone ... no agreement," he said. "We will not withdraw even by a millimeter in Syria." Israel moved into the buffer zone in southwestern Syria in December 2024 and later took control of the peak of Mount Hermon.

Libya's army chief of staff, Mohammed al-Haddad, and four other military officials were killed when their business jet crashed south of Ankara on Tuesday evening, Libyan and Turkish authorities said, reported Xinhua. Turkish gendarmerie units located the wreckage of the Falcon 50 jet near Kesikkavak village in Ankara's Haymana district, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah later confirmed the deaths in a statement, saying al-Haddad and several senior military officials were killed when the aircraft crashed while returning from an official visit to Türkiye. He said the government would investigate "the circumstances of the accident." The aircraft, with tail number 9H-DFJ, departed Ankara's Esenboga Airport at 20:10 local time (1710 GMT) bound for Tripoli. Contact was lost at 20:52 (1752 GMT), shortly after the crew issued an emergency landing notification near Haymana, Yerlikaya said. Türkiye's Anadolu Agency broadcast footage it said showed a flash from the aircraft's impact and published images of debris scattered at the site. Air traffic at Ankara, which was briefly suspended following the crash, has since returned to normal, local media reported. Al-Haddad had been in Ankara for high-level military talks. Earlier on Tuesday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said he met Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Chief of the General Staff Selcuk Bayraktaroglu.
