Army on Lacson’s claims of brewing discontent within military: Not true

MANILA, Philippines —The Philippine Army on Wednesday downplayed claims made by Sen. Panfilo Lacson that there was a “widespread frustration” within the uniformed services reiterating its non-partisan stance. Lieutenant General Antonio G. Nafarrete, Army commanding general in a statement said the military is aware of Lacson’s statements but denied any truth to it and assured that the service remains fully committed to ensuring the well-being of all its soldiers. “As a disciplined and professional organization, the Philippine Army stands firm in our oath of service. We are a non-partisan organization and will not intervene in any political activity. Our commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law is unwavering,” Nafarrete said in a statement. Citing “independent intel,” Lacson said the armed forces are getting frustrated over overlapping national issues, including the tension in the Senate, inflation, the rise in oil prices, and the flood control scandal. He said the armed services “should be more discerning and not allow themselves to be misled by potential ‘troublemakers’ within the Senate premises.” Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen Romeo S. Brawner Jr. earlier debunked rumors of coup attempts and inclination to any destabilization plots. “Nakikita namin ang nangyayari sa ating bansa. Hindi naman kami bulag. Hindi rin kami bingi. We know what is happening. Pero hindi naman po namin mandato na makialam sa politika. That is not our mandate,” Brawner said in an interview.
