European Union (EU) foreign ministers met in Copenhagen on Saturday, and they unanimously urged the United States to reconsider its recent decision to deny entry visas to Palestinian officials, reported Xinhua. The U.S. Department of State said Friday in a statement that it is "denying and revoking visas from members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly." The meeting also discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, but the participants were deeply divided over whether to impose further sanctions against Israel. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told a press conference that while member states broadly agree on the gravity of the situation, consensus has not been reached on concrete measures. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who chaired the meeting, said an increasing number of member states believe Israel is unlikely to change course without stronger pressure. Outside the meeting venue, demonstrators gathered, urging Denmark and the EU to take stronger action over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

At least 11 people were killed and one went missing Saturday after fresh rains triggered cloudbursts and a landslide in Indian-administrated Kashmir, reported Xinhua, quoting officials. The cloudbursts and landslide hit the Reasi and Ramban districts, both located south of Srinagar. "Early today at village Karara of Reasi district, seven members of a family were buried alive after a landslide triggered by a cloudburst amid heavy rainfall flattened their house. The villagers have recovered the bodies," an official said. In another incident, four people were killed and one went missing following a cloudburst in Rajgad village of Ramban district. Saturday's incidents were the latest in a series of such tragedies that have hit the region recently during the monsoon. Last week, heavy rains in the region triggered flooding and unleashed a wave of devastation, claiming at least 41 lives and causing damage to infrastructure on a large scale.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday pledged to detain and send back illegal migrants as the government faces mounting pressure to tackle Channel crossings and the issue of asylum hotels, reported Xinhua. "I am clear: we will not reward illegal entry. If you cross the Channel unlawfully, you will be detained and sent back," Starmer said on social media platform X. His remarks came as several demonstrations were held across England on Saturday, including in London, Skegness and Gloucester, where asylum seekers are being housed in hotels. Five people were arrested in west London. Thousands had attended protests over the summer, which began after an asylum seeker housed at a hotel was arrested and subsequently charged with several offenses, including the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. The number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels rose to more than 32,000 in the year to June, according to Home Office data. The government had promised to close asylum hotels by the time of the next general election. Britain and France are trialing a scheme to send migrants arriving on small boats across the English Channel back to France in exchange for the same number of asylum seekers being brought to Britain on a legal route. But the numbers involved in this scheme are likely to represent only a small fraction of those who arrive. As of July 31, more than 25,000 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025, about 49 percent higher than at the same point in 2024, according to Home Office data.
Joao Pedro extended his fine scoring run as Chelsea claimed a 2-0 win over local rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge, a result overshadowed by a series of controversial refereeing decisions, reported Xinhua. The 55 million-pound summer signing from Brighton struck in first-half stoppage time, heading in Enzo Fernandez's corner to make it five goals in as many starts across all competitions. Fernandez then doubled the lead from the penalty spot after the break, but much of the post-match discussion centred on referee Robert Jones and VAR official Michael Salisbury. Fulham thought they had taken the lead in the 21st minute through Josh King, only for the goal to be disallowed following a VAR review. Salisbury spotted Rodrigo Muniz stepping on Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up, and after consulting the pitchside monitor, Jones confirmed the foul. The decision looked harsh, with replays showing only minimal contact as Muniz shielded the ball with his back to the goal. Fulham, who had dominated much of the opening half, were punished on the stroke of half-time when Joao Pedro's header gave Chelsea the advantage. Their frustration deepened in the second period when Ryan Sessegnon was adjudged to have handled inside the area, allowing Fernandez to convert from 12 yards. The defeat left Fulham boss Marco Silva furious at the officiating, while Chelsea celebrated a valuable victory heading into the international break. The win was tempered slightly by an early injury blow, as striker Liam Delap limped off with a hamstring problem.
