President Marcos has appointed former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Benjamin Acorda Jr. as executive director of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC). Acorda will replace Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz. Malacañang made the announcement on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Acorda served as the PNP chief from April 2023 to March 2024. A member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991, Acorda served as director of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence before he was appointed as PNP chief. Created under Executive Order No. 295 in 2000, the PAOCC was tasked to adopt measures to ensure an effective and efficient anti-crime drive and to identify and prosecute criminal groups and their protectors in government through efficient intelligence and counterintelligence efforts. It can be recalled that the PAOCC has led the crackdown on Philippine offshore gambling operations (POGO) due to the spate of human trafficking and other criminal activities. Marcos ordered the total ban of POGO last year during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA).

A teachers’ group on Wednesday, October 15, called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to suspend the upcoming In-Service Training (INSET) scheduled during the October wellness break to allow educators to fully rest and recover. The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC), in a statement, said DepEd should suspend the conduct of INSET scheduled from October 27 to 31 to enable teachers to “fully enjoy” their Mid-School Year Health and Wellness Break as mandated by DepEd Order No. 12, s. 2025. According to TDC, the order designates the last week of October as a wellness break for both teachers and learners. However, it also encourages schools to hold INSET activities during the same period—placing school heads and division offices in a dilemma. As a result, many schools still plan to push through with mandatory INSET sessions, effectively depriving teachers of their much-needed rest. “Teachers, just like their students, deserve this break,” said TDC National Chairperson Benjo Basas. “After months of continuous work—from lesson preparation and actual classroom teaching to paperwork and assessments—our teachers need time to rest and recharge,” he added. Teachers say break is ‘not a real break’ The group stressed that while INSET aims to strengthen teachers’ professional competencies, it should not come at the cost of their health and well-being. According to Basas, many teachers end up spending the supposed break finalizing learners’ performance outputs, grades, and other administrative tasks—leaving them without a “real” wellness break. “We urge DepEd to review how INSET is being implemented in schools,” Basas said. “This program is funded by public money, and it must truly serve its purpose of developing teachers—not adding to their fatigue,” he added. Call for genuine wellness and balanced policies The TDC acknowledged that INSETs can be valuable when focused on teachers’ welfare and when faculty organizations are empowered to take part in planning and discussions. However, the group emphasized that wellness breaks should prioritize rest, not additional workload. TDC reiterated its call for DepEd to apply wellness policies equitably to both learners and teachers, ensuring genuine care and balance in the school calendar. The group stressed that teachers’ wellness is essential to effective teaching and learning—because when teachers are healthy and well-rested, their students benefit too.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Philippine Airlines flight was forced to return to the Zamboanga International Airport on Tuesday, Oct. 14, after experiencing bird strike while enroute to Manila. One of the passengers said that PAL flight PR2950 left the Zamboanga International Airport at 6:35 a.m. Some 15 minutes into the flight, the engine rumbled followed by an announcement by the pilot that he was turning back the plane due to a bird strike. The airplane landed safely without incident. All passengers and crew were safe. Airline authorities conducted an inspection of the aircraft to assess any damage caused by the incident.

Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso has ordered the drafting and passage of a city ordinance that will require all business establishments in Manila with ten or more employees to have at least one certified first aider on staff. The directive was made during a board meeting of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Manila Chapter held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, where Domagoso also took his oath as the organization’s Honorary Chairman. He said ensuring the presence of a trained first aider in the workplace is essential not only for major disasters but also for everyday emergencies that may occur. The mayor also emphasized the need for a proactive approach to workplace safety, stating that any establishment with ten or more employees must have at least one certified first aider. Domagoso explained that the proposed "10 is to 1" ratio ensures that in any business setting, there is someone trained to respond to medical emergencies. “If we have 10 employees, mag-10 is to 1 tayo, basta any establishment who will hire 10, who will be manned by 10 up, must have one first aider, i-require natin. It\'s about saving life, on a day-to-day basis, in the absence of the possible Big One, magagamit pa rin nila for themselves. President Marcos asserted that he has nothing to hide in the ongoing investigation on the massive flood control mess, stressing that attempts to link him into corruption allegations were politically motivated. "I am confident because I know what we did or did not do," Marcos said on Wednesday, Oct. 15, responding to claims that the corruption probe would eventually lead to his doorsteps. "So, let them do their work. We do not interfere with what they do... Sinabi ko na nga ‘yan. Wala naman tayong tinatago (I already said it. We have nothing to hide)," Marcos stressed. Marcos pointed out that whatever allegations thrown at his administration, he will be able to prove that these are all due to politics. He said they just want him out. "I\'m confident that whatever mud might be slung at the administration, that we will be able to show that these are politically motivated and do not actually have any validation in fact," he said. "I know that there are several – the opposition would love to bring me into this – to include me in all of this. But that\'s politics. That is not – that is not to do about corruption. That is to do about politics," he added. The President emphasized that the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), which he formed to investigate anomalies surrounding the flood-control projects in the country, is an independent body and will not be influenced by him. He said this amid some of his allies, including his cousin former House speaker Martin Romualdez, are being floated to be involved in the multi-billion corruption. "So, but if they investigate, they investigate everybody. Follow the evidence and wherever that leads, it\'s not something that we try to direct or influence," he said. "That\'s why we have the ICI. They are an independent commission. And that is their job. And their job is to follow the leads that they receive. And if necessary or if it is justified, that they can – they will now recommend to either the Ombudsman or to the DOJ that cases be filed," he added.
