Bicam livestream is like watching 'rigged wrestling match' – solons

MANILA, Philippines—President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s announcement that he would livestream the bicameral conference committee (bicam) deliberations on the 2026 national budget was nothing more than performative transparency meant to distract the public from the corruption scandal hounding his administration, the Makabayan bloc said. The group argued that livestreaming the traditionally closed-door process in the budget cycle would not eliminate pork barrel insertions and unprogrammed appropriations (UA) in the budget bill. Both minority lawmakers and civil society organizations that were allowed to participate in the budget cycle as non-voting observers have criticized the continued allocation of at least P230 billion for […]... LPA may enter PH but easterlies to bring rains in Metro Manila, other areas

MANILA, Philippines – A low pressure area (LPA) off Eastern Visayas may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within the day, the state-run weather agency said on Thursday. The weather disturbance may develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 to 36 hours, weather specialist Loriedin Dela Cruz-Galicia of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said. Pagasa said the storm, once inside, would be called "Ramil," the 18th storm to hit the country this year. Based on Pagasa's projection, the weather disturbance may make landfall between Cagayan and Isabela. “It is also forecast to first pass through Bicol Region before it passes close (to) Northern and Central Luzon,” the Pagasa forecaster said. In the meantime, the national weather bureau said Metro Manila, Visayas, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Bicol Region, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, and Bulacan would have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the easterlies. The other weather system – the northeasterly wind flow – has been affecting Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte where partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated light rains would prevail. Pagasa said the rest of Luzon would likely have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms also due to the easterlies- winds that pass through the Pacific Ocean and carry humid and warm weather. Mindanao, on one hand, will be experiencing similar weather patterns but due to the localized thunderstorms, it added.

Stocks rise on US rate cut hopes, strong company earnings

NEW YORK, United States — Stocks mostly rose and the dollar retreated Wednesday on hopes for further US interest rate cuts and a solid set of company earnings. Gold surged to a new high above $4,200 an ounce. This was boosted also by a fresh flare-up in China-US tensions. The dollar was weighed down by warnings on Tuesday from Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell on risks to the US labor market. This reinforced expectations the central bank will cut rates at its October meeting. “There was nothing in yesterday’s speech to kind of dissuade the market from thinking those rate cuts […]... Judge in Chicago area bars ICE from arresting people at court

CHICAGO — Cook County’s top judge signed an order barring ICE from arresting people at court. Cook County includes Chicago, which has seen a federal immigration crackdown in recent months. Detaining residents outside courthouses has been a common tactic for federal agents, who have been stationed outside county courthouses for weeks, making arrests and drawing crowds of protesters. The order, which was signed Tuesday night and took effect Wednesday, bars the civil arrest of any “party, witness, or potential witness” while going to court proceedings. It includes arrests inside courthouses and in parking lots, surrounding sidewalks, and entryways. “The fair […]... Keep on reading: Judge in Chicago area bars ICE from arresting people at court

Judge temporarily blocks Trump admin from firing workers during shutdown

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from firing workers during the government shutdown, saying the cuts appeared to be politically motivated and were being carried out without much thought. US District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco repeatedly pressed the assistant US attorney to explain the administration’s rationale for the more than 4,100 layoff notices that started going out on Friday even though furloughed workers can not access their work emails and there are no human resources specialists to assist with next steps. “It’s very much ready, fire, aim on most of […]... Journalists exit Pentagon rather than agree to new reporting rules

NEW YORK — Dozens of reporters turned in access badges and exited the Pentagon on Wednesday rather than agree to government-imposed restrictions on their work, pushing journalists who cover the American military further from the seat of its power. The nation’s leadership called the new rules “common sense” to help regulate a “very disruptive” press. News outlets were nearly unanimous in rejecting new rules imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that would leave journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they sought to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by Hegseth for release. Many of […]... Keep on reading: Journalists exit Pentagon rather than agree to new reporting rules
