83% of Filipinos back Marcos Jr.'s anti-corruption efforts in flood projects

(UPDATE) NEARLY all Filipinos supported President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to expose corruption in flood control projects even if there were political consequences for him, a survey conducted by OCTA Research showed. In its latest Tugon ng Masa survey conducted from Sept. 25 to 30, 2025, 83 percent or eight out of 10 Filipinos said that they supported the move of Marcos, with only three percent disagreeing and 13 percent ambivalent. Broken down by region, the National Capital Region had the highest agreement at 91 percent, followed by Balanced Luzon at 90 percent. It was lower in Visayas at 64 percent and Mindanao at 78 percent. Ambivalence, however, was high in Visayas and Mindanao, with 24 percent and 16 percent saying they neither agree or disagree. OCTA said the results indicate a “strong reservoir of public goodwill and trust for the president’s decision to confront corruption head-on.” “The findings suggest that sustained transparency and follow-through on reforms could further strengthen public confidence in government integrity and leadership,” it added. Six out of 10 Filipinos, or 60 percent, said they are “angry” or “outraged” when they think about corruption in the government, particularly in flood control initiatives, while 30 percent expressed “fear” or “anxiety” and nine percent reported “sadness” or “disappointment.” Meanwhile, nearly one in two Filipinos, or 46 percent, believe that an independent commission from the private sector, such as the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, is seen as the most suited to lead the investigation in the flood control mess, while only 23 percent said the Senate is the most appropriate institution and 13 percent said the House of Representatives should take the lead. The survey had 1,200 respondents and a margin of error of plus or minus three percent nationwide and six percent by major area.

PBBM inspects ‘mega' Camalaniugan-Aparri bridge in Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday led the inspection of the nearly completed Camalaniugan Bridge which will connect the northeastern and northwestern parts of Cagayan Province. Once completed, the 1,580-meter-long cable-stayed bridge will connect the towns of Aparri and Camalaniugan. It is the only bridge crossing the Cagayan River in the northernmost part of Cagayan. With a total contract price of P2.34 billion, the “mega bridge” is a joint venture between Agafer Construction, a local construction firm, and Hunan Road and Bridge Construction, a China-based company, implemented under a design-and-build scheme. Construction began in 2021. However, the pandemic pushed back its completion date with its new target inauguration slated for January 2026. According to Malacañang, once fully operational, the Camalaniugan Bridge will improve accessibility, strengthen economic connections, and cut travel time between the towns of Aparri and Ballesteros. It would also serve as an alternative route to the old Magapit Suspension Bridge. Travel time via the Magapit Bridge is projected to decrease from one hour to at least 20 minutes, benefiting 6,000 travelers a day.

However, the pandemic pushed back its completion date with its new target inauguration slated for January 2026. Marcos, however, hopes the bridge would already be open to traffic in time for Christmas. “This is a big deal because Aparri-Claveria, Aparri-Ballesteros, up to Ballesteros there are already good roads. Six thousand people would be able to pass through here every day,” he said. “So, there will be a lot of traffic. The Aparri Port is right there. All the goods that are brought everywhere — travel long distances. Here, it would be trimmed to only 20 minutes,” he added. Once fully operational, the Camalaniugan Bridge is expected to improve accessibility, strengthen economic connections, and cut travel time between Aparri, Cagayan and Ballesteros, Cagayan and would also serve as an alternative route to the old Magapit Suspension Bridge.
