Pagasa sees two to four tropical cyclones hitting Philippines in September

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that at least two to four tropical cyclones may enter the country’s area of responsibility this month. Pagasa administrator Nathaniel Servando said the first tropical cyclone that would hit in September would be named “Kiko.” Pagasa predicted more cyclones at the end of the year because of the La Niña phenomenon which would likely start in September. Servando said there would be above-normal rainfall conditions in most parts of the country that can trigger floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. He cited model forecasts that suggested an increasing probability of short-lived La Niña conditions from September until December. Pagasa said La Niña is characterized by unusually cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. When conditions are favorable for the development of La Niña within the next six months and the probability is 55 percent or more, a La Niña Watch is issued, the Pagasa chief said.
