Isolate if exhibiting symptoms of influenza-like illness, public urged

MANILA, Philippines — While cases of influenza-like illnesses were lower this year compared to last year, the public is still urged to isolate themselves should they exhibit symptoms to avoid spreading the infection, which can become severe and lead to hospitalization. “When you look at this type of infection, we sometimes think… it’s just a fever. But sometimes it can lead to what we call severe acute respiratory infection,” Dr. Rontgene Solante, chair of the adult infectious diseases section at San Lazaro Hospital, said during a forum on Tuesday. Castro to VP Sara: You’re all talk

Castro to VP Sara: You’re all talk

MANILA, Philippines — Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro again blasted Vice President Sara Duterte over the latter’s comments that the Marcos family is scheming to stay in power. Duterte made the remarks in a press conference in Davao Oriental. “All talk, all accusations. No evidence, no value. President (Ferdinand) Marcos Jr. is fighting corruption — something the previous administration failed to do," Castro said in Filipino in a text message to reporters. She noted that the people’s eyes are now wide open and can see that the President is trying to eradicate corruption unlike his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte. The country was in worse condition under the elder Duterte, Castro asserted, because he purportedly defended those who abused state funds such as those involved in the Pharmally scandal with the present administration now left to “clean up the mess.” “They should not divert the sins they have committed to the people,” she said.

Pushing Marcos to resign ‘pointless’ — VP Sara

Pushing Marcos to resign ‘pointless’ — VP Sara

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte said that she is not urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to resign as it would be a "pointless" call. "I never said 'Marcos resign', what I said was for him to take a drug test. That is a hanging open challenge that until now he has not done, that is a betrayal of public trust because when you are a president or a vice president, you consecrate yourself to the service of the nation," Duterte said in a press briefing in Zamboanga City on Tuesday. She said that the signing of the "doubtful" 2025 national budget was also a "culpable violation of the constitution.” "That is what I want him to answer, but what they are doing is they are getting someone to be attacked to forget questions about the capacity of the president to become a leader," Duterte said. She said that any call for Marcos to resign is "pointless," noting that former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was in power for 20 years. "So I am asking him to do his job, but we know he is not doing his job," Duterte said. She denied that Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco Barzaga, who has been  mounting calls for Marcos to resign, was acting on her orders. "Do you think, based on the personality of Barzaga, he can be controlled by someone? You saw his independent mind and principles," Duterte said.

Parañaque obtains DILG’s highest governance award

Parañaque obtains DILG’s highest governance award

MANILA, Philippines — Parañaque City capped another year of strong economic and governance performance after the Department of the Interior and Local Government–National Capital Region (DILG–NCR) conferred on it the 2025 Metro Manila SubayBAYANI Award (Mark of Excellence), the region’s highest distinction for exemplary local governance. The recognition came as the city’s economy expanded by 6.8% in 2024, with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reaching P366.44 billion, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). Parañaque shared the SubayBAYANI Award with Pasig and Las Piñas, which were likewise honored for visionary leadership and programs that produced the “Most Significant Change” in their localities. The award, introduced by DILG–NCR, celebrates local governments that excel in performance monitoring, infrastructure management, and citizen participation. Under the leadership of Mayor Edwin Olivarez, Parañaque has been cited for its focus on sustainable infrastructure, digital transformation, and participatory governance—all of which have helped drive the city’s sustained economic growth. “This recognition is a testament to the collective effort of our people and the unwavering dedication of our city government to serve with transparency, efficiency, and compassion,” Olivarez said. “Our goal has always been to create a city where progress is shared by all—where every project, every innovation, and every policy uplifts the lives of Parañaquenyos.” PSA’s records indicate that the city's 2024 growth built on its 8.7% GDP expansion in 2023, when it was the fastest-growing highly urbanized city in Metro Manila. The city’s per capita GDP stood at P521,065, based on the latest population data. City Treasurer Dr. Anthony Pulmano said the services sector remained the city’s primary economic driver, accounting for 78.6% of total output and expanding by 7.3%. Also, Pulmano said the industry sector grew by 5.1%, while transportation and storage posted the highest growth at 19%, followed by accommodation and food service activities at 9.9% — indicators of a strong post-pandemic recovery. In a separate assessment, the Department of Finance ranked Parañaque 4th nationwide in Year-on-Year Growth in Local Source Revenues and 6th in overall Local Source Revenues among highly urbanized cities. It also placed 8th in the ratio of local revenues to total current operating income, reflecting the city’s sound fiscal management. Olivarez credited the city’s business community and local workforce for sustaining Parañaque’s upward trajectory. “This consistent growth underscores the city’s strength as a key economic hub in Metro Manila,” he said. “Our success is the result of sound fiscal management, responsible governance, and the continued trust of our business community,” he added. The mayor dedicated the DILG award to Parañaque’s residents, saying the city’s achievements reflect their shared commitment to transparency, innovation, and inclusive development. “This award belongs to every Parañaquenyo who believes in our vision of a modern, inclusive, and compassionate city,” Olivarez said. “Together, we will continue to build a future founded on integrity, resilience, and progress.”

Palace appeals for calm amid public’s impatience with corruption probe

Palace appeals for calm amid public’s impatience with corruption probe

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday appealed to the public to remain calm as the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) investigates anomalous flood control projects. Presidential Communication Office Undersecretary Claire Castro issued the statement in reaction to a recent Pulse Asia survey showing that most Filipinos are critical and growing impatient with how the government is addressing inflation and massive corruption. Castro, a lawyer, said that cases without strong evidence to stand on usually crumble due to technicalities. “Just calm down. It doesn't happen immediately,” Castro said in Filipino in a press conference. “What is more unacceptable? Many cases were filed but all were dismissed because the evidence was not ripe and insufficient? Let's let the ICI develop their investigation and complete the needed documents. Their promise is that week four they will be able to file cases or recommend the filing of cases,” she said. “Let's just let them collect documents and evidence so that the cases to be filed are stronger. So don't be impatient. If not for the President, who else will initiate the investigation?” she added. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last July ordered an audit of flood control projects due to the supposed misuse of public funds. Last September, he created the ICI that would probe anomalies and recommend appropriate charges to be filed against erring contractors and public officials.
