Marigondon, Subabasbas residents endure 3-month water shortage; City steps in

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Two barangays in Lapu-Lapu City have been experiencing little to no water supply for more than three months. Barangays Marigondon and Subabasbas are within the service area of the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD). Residents of these barangays are currently dependent on water trucks to meet their daily needs because MCWD’s bulk water supplier, Mactan Rock Industries Inc., could no longer produce enough potable water due to the high salinity of its water source. Improved Malabon governance marks Sandoval’s first 100 days

MANILA, Philippines — Swift action in disaster response, expanded healthcare services, strengthened social support, and sustained economic growth marked the first 100 days of the second term of Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, who vowed improved, results-driven governance. Under her administration, Sandoval said social services in Malabon continued to reach thousands of households. Through the flagship Blue Card Program, more than 93,000 household heads received financial assistance, including solo parents, senior citizens, and families in need, complemented by livelihood training programs for persons with disability, daycare learners, and youth. Sandoval told The Manila Times on Wednesday that in times of calamity, the city government provided immediate relief to affected residents — distributing over 1,500 food packs, 900 hygiene kits, and 5,000 hot meals to evacuees, with the support of volunteers and partner agencies. In the field of health, thousands of residents benefited from the "Lab for All" initiative. At the same time, the new 200-bed San Lorenzo Ruiz Hospital building was inaugurated, expanding access to quality medical care for Malabueños. The upgrade of the hospital from a 10-bed to a 200-bed capacity was made possible by the initiative of former congressman and First Gentleman Ricky Sandoval, who authored House Bill 7362, City Administrator Alexander Rosete said. Malabon emerged as the second fastest-growing city in the National Capital Region in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), growth based on the records from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), “a testament to the growing confidence of investors and entrepreneurs,” Rosete said. This milestone was achieved through the city’s continued support for businesses, including the implementation of the Electronic Business One-Stop Shop (eBOSS), which made business permit processes more efficient and accessible, the city government said. Last month, over 1,100 job seekers participated in city-led job fairs, with 200 hired on the spot. Meanwhile, nearly 1,000 residents gained temporary employment under the Tulong Pangkabuhayan para sa Disadvantaged Workers and the Special Program for the Employment of Students. Environmental efforts continued citywide through regular dredging, cleanup drives, and tree-planting activities, alongside the maintenance of over 40 pumping stations. The “Mobile Jeannie” Services program also brought essential support to flood-prone areas — from cleanup operations to water distribution. The initiative delivers mobile services such as Mobile Laundry, Mobile Shower, Power Washer, and Mobile Charging Stations to communities across its 21 villages, the city administrator said. The city government also pushed forward with various infrastructure projects, including road clearing, drainage improvements, and housing programs for families relocated to resettlement sites. Malabon completed its Executive-Legislative Agenda for 2026–2028 and achieved the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Certification, affirming the city’s commitment to efficient, transparent, and high-quality public service. Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) recognized the city as the Best Local Government Unit in implementing DOLE’s Integrated Livelihood Program — underscoring effective leadership and collaboration in promoting local livelihood opportunities. The city was also recently recognized by the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) for its successful poverty-reduction efforts. According to NAPC, Malabon’s poverty incidence dropped to 1.5 percent (approximately 1,380 families) in 2023 — a significant improvement from 2.9 percent (or 2,620 families) recorded in 2021.

Tigers fend off Tamaraws, seize share of lead

University of Santo Tomas leaned on a late surge to fend off Far Eastern University, 92-80, and notch its third consecutive win in the UAAP Season 88 men\'s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Tied at 68 with eight and a half minutes remaining, the Growling Tigers caught fire with Kyle Paranada and Nic Cabañero orchestrating a 23-12 run that created a comfortable cushion -- one the Tamaraws tried but ultimately failed to overcome. With the win, the España-based squad secured a share of the lead with National University at 5-1, while FEU suffered its second straight loss for a 1-5 card. Paranada topped UST’s scoring column with 19 points on top of two rebounds, four assists, and one steal, while Cabañero and Gelo Crisostomo added 14 points apiece. Collins Akowe, for his part, posted a double-double outing of 12 points and 11 rebounds with two assists, one steal, and four blocks, even as Forthsky Padrigao scored 11 points. The Tigers’ bench also shone as they conspired for 35 points, outshining FEU’s 14. Janrey Pasaol and Mo Konateh unloaded 22 and 19 points, respectively, but were not enough to lift the Tamaraws to victory. Kirby Mongcopa and Jorick Baustista also registered 11 points apiece in a losing cause.

Greg Slaughter expresses intention to make PBA comeback

Greg Slaughter expresses intention to make PBA comeback

Greg Slaughter has expressed his intention to return to the PBA three years after his messy departure from the league. In a statement he released on Wednesday, Oct. 15, Slaughter made amends for all of the miscommunications in the past that led to his unceremonious exit before expressing his intention to make his PBA comeback. "It is with the same gratitude that I approach this new season in my life with humility - the humility to recognize what I did wrong, and the humility to offer my profound apologies for miscommunications in the past that caused offense to an association that has been so good to me, an association that has made my dream of playing for a Filipino premier league come true,” said Slaughter. Slaughter said it has been a dream of him to play in the PBA and he wanted his wife and children to see him play again in the big league. “It is my dream to come back, and it is my dream for my family to see me proud of playing on the home court. I want my wife and children to watch me play basketball in the PBA again. I want my three daughters to be proud of their father. I want them to grow up seeing me beam with pride in the PBA,” he added. The 7-foot center last played in the PBA as part of then-NorthPort Batang Pier before leaving to play in the Japan B.League in 2021. And he couldn’t help but look back at the past years playing outside the PBA – a stretch where he felt something was missing in him. “It is my dream to come back, and it is my dream for my family to see me proud of playing on the home court. I want my wife and children to watch me play basketball in the PBA again. I want my three daughters to be proud of their father. I want them to grow up seeing me beam with pride in the PBA,” he said. Slaughter also mentioned SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, who he thanked for allowing him to play at Ginebra where he won four PBA championships. As it stands, the right of Slaughter remained with Titan Ultra, the new team which acquired his old team NorthPort. There has been talks about his potential comebacks but nothing has materialized yet for the two camps.
