Do you need a lot of storage? Well, then, you’re going to have to pay for it—and you’ll be paying a lot more than you would have a year ago, as “AI” data centers gobble up a bigger and bigger share of the industry’s output of memory and storage. But even the most lavish among us would probably wince at dropping nearly $16,000 USD on an M.2 drive, even if it does have a capacity of 16 terabytes. The Exascend Enterprise-Grade PE4 Gen 4 SSD now comes in a 16TB capacity, and as far as I can tell, it’s the first one to hit that mark for a single M.2 drive sold to the public at a standard retailer. Many of the drives available to us mere mortals top out at 8TB, which is already overkill for most users. But this drive’s price is a lot more shocking than its capacity: $15,935. That’s about a grand per terabyte, and more than double the cost of the same drive’s 8TB variant. Amazon SSDs are getting more expensive than ever after years of affordability, but this is still an insane price. For comparison, a top-of-the-line PCIe 5.0 drive from Samsung with 8TB is $1,595 , which is still pricey but approximately ONE-TENTH the cost of this “Enterprise-Grade” example. Oh, and it’s more than three times faster, too—the Exascend drive is PCIe 4.0, which is fast but far from the fastest. The Amazon description calls it “blazing,” which is open to interpretation. According to the listing, the drive is “built to operate reliably from 0°C to 70°C with an impressive 2,000,000-hour MTBF” (mean time between failures, a measure of extended operation). And to back it up, the drive advertises a 5-year limited warranty, though the exact terms of that warranty aren’t spelled out on Amazon. On the company’s website , it says that the PE4 series is five years… or to the end of the “advertised DWPD or TBW rating.” (Those terms are Drive Writes Per Day and Total Bytes Written, respectively.) The spec sheet lists these at 0.6 drive writes per day for five years, or 16,640 terabytes. This listing, spotted by VideoCardz , is interesting because it’s being sold straight to consumers, assuming said consumers can afford to drop about a quarter of the average US salary on a single M.2 drive at once. (Incidentally, Amazon is also offering to let me pay $1,327.92 per month for twelve months. How generous.)

Regular ones are fine for everyday stuff. 2-in-1s are cool because the screen flips around. Chromebooks are cheap and good if you mostly do web browsing. How much power? Depends on what you’re doing. For basic web or email, an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 works fine. If you’re into video editing or creative stuff, an i7/i9 or Ryzen 7/9 is better. And if you’re handling heavy 4K editing or lots of apps, a Ryzen 9 is your best bet. Discrete graphics vs. integrated graphics? Gamers and video editors need a legit graphics card—Nvidia, AMD, something with real muscle. But if all you’re doing is YouTube, emails, and Netflix, the built-in graphics won’t hold you back. How much RAM? 8GB of RAM is plenty for most stuff. If you’re gaming, 16GB is better, and 32GB will keep you covered for a while. Content creators should try to get as much RAM as they can. What’s the right display size? Doing video edits? Go bigger—15 or 17 inches helps a ton. For everyday use, 13 or 14 inches usually does the trick. Light enough to toss in your bag, not a pain to carry, and still plenty of space to get stuff done. Battery-life expectations If you’re gonna carry your laptop around, try to get one that lasts 10 to 12 hours on a charge. That’s usually enough for a long flight or a full day of classes. Some of the new Snapdragon laptops are even crushing that, with one going up to 25 hours thanks to their super-efficient chips . Just remember, bigger batteries usually mean heavier laptops. Laptop pricing guide A decent laptop usually runs $500 to $750. If money’s tight, a Chromebook or a basic work laptop under $500 will get you by. Stop me if you've heard this before: Meta has a new program to lure top creator talent to Facebook and it comes with hefty bonus payments. The company is launching a new initiative aimed at popular creators who already have large followings on TikTok, YouTube or Instagram and offering them bonuses up to $3,000 a month just for posting on Facebook. Meta's goal is to lure more top talent to its Content Monetization program, which pays creators based on views and other engagement metrics across Stories, Reels and posts. The new bonuses will be part of an initiative Meta has dubbed " Creator Fast Track ," which is meant to make the onboarding process easier — and more enticing — to Facebook newcomers. Under the new "Fast Track" program, Meta is offering monthly bonuses of $1,000 to creators who have at least 100,000 followers on another platform and $3,000 for those that have a million or more. Creators who join will need to post a minimum number of times per month to earn the bonuses, but aren't required to meet engagement targets or post exclusive content to earn. They also aren't require to post video content as Facebook also reward text and photo posts, as well as Stories . That may sound like a pretty good deal (it is), but it's also a limited one. The fast track bonuses will only last for three months. Creators should think of the bonuses as payment "for the hassle of starting on a new platform," not the central part of the program, Meta's VP of Product for Creators, Yair Livne, tells Engadget. "Our hope is that within a few months … the earnings that you see from Facebook Content Monetization will become the more important thing." He also notes that Meta will boost the reach of creators it fast-tracks, which should help them speed up their earning potential. It's far from the first time Facebook has sought to lure big names with big checks. It promised publishers big payouts when it launched Facebook Watch nearly a decade ago. It once courted game streamers for its (now defunct) Twitch competitor. A year after launching Reels to take on TikTok, it invested $1 billion in a bonus program that offered creators as much as $35,000 a month only to pull the plug in 2023. Livne acknowledged that it "took us a long time to find our path" to a more sustainable creator program. "We don't have a pool structure so you're not competing with other creators for dollars. It really is based on your performance." There are already signs that the Facebook Content Monetization program, which it introduced in the fall of 2024, is working — at least for some. Meta says it paid Facebook creators nearly $3 billion in 2025, a new high for the social network. Creators have also reported that the new streamlined program is paying off. One political news creator told the newsletter Chaotic Era that they made $250,000 from Facebook in January alone. Publishers told Digiday last year that they expected to make "between six and seven figures" in 2025 thanks to the program. There are numerous recent posts in Reddit's r/passiveincome forum where users report making five figures a month from the program, which is still invitation only. Livne agrees that Facebook's monetization program has been something of a "well kept secret" in the creator community. "We're trying to make it less well kept and less of a secret."
