Farewell Chato - Peru's heroic parachuting dog retires after decade of service

"The celebrated parachuting dog 'Chato' has retired from the National Police of Peru’s Special Operations Division (DINOES) in Lima after nearly 11 years of service, which included parachute jumps and rescue missions. He had been expected to bid farewell during the 2025 Military Parade for Independence Day in Lima on July 29. However, while he was present at the pre-event, he was unable to march after parts of the programme were cut, according to local media. Footage captured on Friday shows Chato with his handler, Second Sergeant Jaime Monteza, at the DINOES headquarters in Lima. Monteza dressed him in his tactical uniform and beret before accompanying him to an aircraft for a symbolic farewell. Monteza said officers had always looked after Chato, especially in his later years, when parachute jumps could have posed health risks. “He did not falter. He had no fear whatsoever. He was always with us. Unfortunately, he no longer has the age he once had. He used to be young and had great stamina. Now, the years do not pass in vain, and sadly, this year was his last parade,” Monteza said. Chato first arrived at the Special Operations Division as a stray pup wandering around the premises. Officers took him in, brought him to a vet, and later trained him through rigorous Special Operations (COPES) and Riot Control (CODIR) courses. He went on to participate in a search-and-rescue mission. For Monteza, the dog became far more than a service companion. “Since Chato came into my life, he has become a close companion, giving me stability, confidence and a sense of responsibility in caring for another life,” he said. His absence from the official 2025 Military Parade prompted criticism on social media, where users on X accused President Dina Boluarte of sidelining the police canine unit."
