Russian President Vladimir Putin is still pushing his troops forwards into Ukraine. The Kremlin has confirmed that it will continue its full-scale invasion of Ukraine throughout autumn in a major blow to Donald Trump’s peace efforts. The US president has repeatedly declared that Russia wants to end the war, even going as far as to tell Emmanuel Macron that Vladimir Putin “wants to make a deal for me” in a bizarre hot mic moment. While Trump did meet Putin face-to-face in Alaska earlier this month , he has still failed to get any substantial concessions from the Russian leader. On August 21, he said he would know “ within two weeks” if Putin was serious about entering negotiations. And it seems Russia offered up an answer this weekend. In comments reported by Russia’s Defence Ministry, the chief of General Staff of the Russian army, Valery Gerasimov, confirmed that Putin’s offensive will not be stopping any time soon. According to the Kyiv Independent , he said: “The implementation of the tasks of the (full-scale invasion of Ukraine) by the Joint Group of Troops will continue by conducting offensive actions.” Gerasimov said : “Today we will clarify the tasks of the troop groups in the directions for the autumn period.” He added that “targeted massive fire strikes” will continue, too – days after Russia’s fatal attacks on Kyiv left more than 20 dead, and Europe outraged. He claimed these are “ launched only against military objects and facilities of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex” – even though Russia’s attacks often strike residential buildings. The most recent strike on the Ukrainian capital hit the offices for the British Council and EU delegations, too. The White House offered a lukewarm response to those strikes, saying the president was “not happy” but not surprised, either. The US is yet to respond to this latest remark from the Russian Defence Ministry. It remains to be seen whether Trump will actually act on his promise to “take a different tack” with Putin, as he is yet to act on any of his threats to impose sanctions on the country. Trump has also been trying to make Putin meet with Ukraine’s president to begin peace talks. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear he is ready to meet, but the Kremlin is yet to agree. Putin is also making headway on the frontline and – according to the Kremlin – still capturing more Ukrainian land, although academics at the Institute for Studying War believe he is “inflating” most of those claims. Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of its European neighbour’s sovereign territory. Related...
