Donald Trump answers questions from reporters as he meets with Congo's Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner, and Rwanda's Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, Friday, June 27, 2025. Donald Trump has been urged to take action over Vladimir Putin’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine immediately as Ukrainians warn the country is “out of time”. The US president has tried to encourage the Russian president to the negotiating table with threats of further sanctions but is yet to see any substantial progress. Putin even launched a deadly strike on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Wednesday night, killing at least 18 people including four children , and hitting the offices of the British Council and EU delegations. This sparked widespread outrage, and Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was clear Moscow was choosing “ballistics instead of the negotiating table”. But the White House had a much calmer reaction, saying Trump was “not happy, but also not surprised”. His press secretary Karoline Leavitt even overlooked how the war started with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and instead focusing on Kyiv’s retaliatory strikes on Russian oil facilities. She told reporters: “Perhaps both sides of this war are not ready to end it.” So the former prime minister of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, sent Trump a clear reality check when speaking to Times Radio overnight about the need for action. He said: “We are out of time. We are not allowed to grant any kind of immunity and impunity for Putin.” Yatsenyuk, who served for two terms between 2014 and 2016, said: “We are not allowed to grant him another weeks, months, or even years. Because Putin strongly believes that he can even get years of this. “The US administration and personally President Trump, they can impose sanctions and right now, it all depends on the leadership of the leader of the free world, because I still believe that the United States still presents and represents the free world and it is the flagship of this free world... Putin doesn’t care about words. He cares about actions. It is high time. It is really high time to act. “There is no safe place in my country right now. Neither on the front line, nor in the capital of Ukraine, nor in the west of Ukraine. Every single spot, every single residential area is hit, or could be hit, by Russians.” Before returning to the White House, Trump promised to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours – that was more than seven months ago. Meanwhile, Putin is still making progress on the frontline, and currently holds around 20% of Ukraine’s sovereign land. Related... The beginning of the end came early one Saturday morning. We were sitting in the departures zone at Stansted airport , waiting to board a red-eye flight for a family birthday reunion early last year. But something was wrong with our bank account. One of our tenants had just paid his monthly rent – for only half the amount due. He’d unilaterally decided to deduct £750. We had no idea why.
