'He must be detained if we truly have justice' - Tensions erupt as hundreds in Buenos Aires rally against Netanyahu's possible visit

"Hundreds of people marched along Avenida Corrientes and gathered at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires on Saturday to protest President Javier Milei's invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the country. They also condemned what they described as the genocide taking place in Gaza. Footage shows protesters marching with Palestinian flags and keffiyehs, chanting slogans. At one point, tensions escalated when police clashed with a photographer, injuring him. According to reports, at least two people were detained. "A motorbike ran me over (…) They all threw themselves on top of me and started hitting me," said Fernando Iglesias, an injured photojournalist. Social, political and human rights groups warned that Netanyahu’s potential visit would be 'a disgrace' for Argentina.  "He has been labelled a war criminal by the International Criminal Court and must be detained if we truly have justice," said political scientist Tamara Lalli. Organisers vowed to continue mobilising, framing the protests as a show of solidarity with Palestine and a rejection of Milei's support for Israel. The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200 others, according to Israeli officials. Israel's subsequent military operations in Gaza have killed more than 63,300 people and injured over 159,800 others at the time of publication, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health."
